How to choose a waterproof running jacket
Most people buy a waterproof running jacket on the waterproof rating. That is the number that matters least. Here is what to look at instead.
The problem with “waterproof”
A running jacket has to do two contradictory things: stop several millimetres an hour of water getting in, while letting out the roughly one litre an hour of sweat a running body produces. Those requirements fight each other, and every jacket on the market is a compromise between them.
Understand that and the whole category makes sense. A jacket that is spectacularly waterproof and poorly breathable will leave you soaked in your own sweat and feeling like it leaked. A jacket that breathes beautifully will wet out in sustained heavy rain. Neither is defective. They are tuned differently.
For running specifically, breathability matters more than waterproofing — because you generate moisture continuously and heavily, and because most running in rain is under an hour. That single reordering is what separates a good running jacket from a hiking jacket sold to runners.
The two numbers, and which one to ignore
Hydrostatic head (waterproof rating)
Measured in millimetres — how tall a column of water the fabric holds before it leaks. You will see 5,000mm, 10,000mm, 20,000mm.
Rough guide: 5,000mm handles light to moderate rain. 10,000mm handles sustained proper rain. 20,000mm is genuinely for mountains.
Here is the part retailers do not lead with: for running, anything above about 10,000mm is largely marketing. You are outside for 45 minutes, not eight hours, and you are not sitting in a downpour under a pack. Paying a premium to go from 10,000 to 20,000mm buys you a heavier, less breathable jacket in exchange for protection you will essentially never use.
Breathability (MVTR) — the one that matters
Measured in grams of water vapour passing a square metre of fabric in 24 hours: g/m²/24h. Higher is better.
- Below 10,000 — not suitable for running. You will overheat.
- 10,000–15,000 — acceptable for easy running in cool conditions.
- 15,000–20,000 — the sensible target for most runners.
- 20,000+ — what you want for hard efforts or milder temperatures.
If a jacket lists a waterproof rating but not a breathability rating, that omission is information. Assume the breathability is the weaker number.
The short version. A 10,000mm / 20,000 MVTR jacket is a better running jacket than a 20,000mm / 10,000 MVTR jacket, even though the second looks more impressive on the label and usually costs more.
Fit: where jackets actually fail runners
A jacket can have perfect numbers and still be wrong. Check these on the hanger:
Sleeve length with arms forward. Put your arms out in a running position. If the cuffs ride back and expose your wrists, water runs straight down your forearms into the sleeves. Running jackets should be cut with slightly longer arms than a normal jacket for exactly this reason.
Shoulder movement. Swing your arms. Any pull across the back means the jacket will restrict your arm carriage over an hour, which is fatiguing in a way that is hard to identify while you are trying it on.
Length at the back. Should cover the base of your spine when leaning forward. Too short and road spray goes up your back; too long and it flaps and gathers water.
Weight. A good running shell is 100–250g. Anything approaching 400g is a hiking jacket, and you will feel every gram of it on a long run.
Packability. If it does not compress to roughly the size of a fist, you will not carry it on days when the forecast is uncertain — which are exactly the days it exists for.
The hood question
Hoods on running jackets are genuinely divisive, and the honest answer is that most runners are better served by a cap.
A hood that does not turn with your head blocks peripheral vision on both sides, which is a real safety issue near traffic. A hood that does turn with your head needs a stiffened peak and adjustment, which adds weight and bulk. And a hood traps a great deal of heat — the head is where a large proportion of heat loss happens, so covering it while running hard is often the thing that tips you into overheating.
Practical rule: if the jacket has a hood, it must be adjustable and roll away. A fixed, unadjustable hood is worse than no hood. Many experienced wet-weather runners use a peaked cap and a hoodless shell, and find it drier and cooler than the alternative.
Details worth paying for
- Pit zips or back venting. The single most effective breathability feature there is, because it dumps heat mechanically rather than relying on the membrane. Worth more than a 5,000-point MVTR upgrade.
- Taped seams. Stitching makes holes. Untaped seams leak at the shoulders exactly where rain lands hardest. “Fully taped” beats “critically taped”.
- A water-resistant chest pocket that does not bounce. Side pockets swing when you run; chest pockets do not.
- Elasticated or velcro cuffs. Stops water tracking down into the sleeves.
- Reflectivity — useful, but do not treat it as a substitute for a high-vis vest. Reflective detail only works when light is aimed directly at it.
Details not worth paying for
- Waterproof ratings above 10,000mm for road running.
- Insulated waterproofs. Layer separately — an insulated shell can only be worn in one narrow temperature band, and rain happens across a wide one.
- Multiple large pockets. Weight and bounce.
- A brand name on a jacket with no published MVTR.
Why your jacket “stopped being waterproof”
It probably has not. What has usually failed is the DWR — the durable water repellent finish on the outer face. When DWR works, water beads and rolls off. When it wears out, the outer fabric absorbs water and “wets out”. The membrane underneath is still keeping water out, but the saturated outer face blocks vapour from escaping, so sweat condenses inside and you feel wet. Almost everyone diagnoses this as a leak.
Two fixes, in order:
- Heat. DWR is often just disturbed rather than gone. Wash the jacket with a technical wash — never normal detergent, which leaves residues that attract water — then tumble dry on low or press with a cool iron through a cloth. This reactivates the existing finish and works more often than people expect.
- Re-proof. If heat does not restore beading, apply a wash-in or spray-on DWR treatment. Spray-on is better for jackets with a mesh lining, because wash-in also proofs the lining, which you do not want.
Done once or twice a season, this keeps a jacket performing for years. Most jackets replaced for “leaking” needed twenty minutes in a tumble dryer.
Do you actually need one?
Worth asking honestly. If you mostly run under an hour, in temperatures above 12°C, a jacket is often the wrong purchase — you will be wet from the inside regardless, and a cap plus a technical top handles it better. See what to wear running in the rain for the temperature bands.
A waterproof running jacket earns its place when you run in cold rain, in wind, for long durations, or in races where you may be moving slowly enough that you stop generating much heat. In those conditions it stops being a comfort item and starts being a safety one.
